Christopher Itodo from Kaduna and Marylove Edwards from Lagos are through to the semifinals
of their respective categories in the ongoing Midwestern Oil & Gas Junior Tennis Championship
taking place at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.
The semifinal matches are scheduled to hold Saturday morning.
Itodo moved up to the Boys 16s for the first time on the circuit and won all his matches in the round robin phase.
He will meet David Amusu from Lagos in one semifinal while the other will be between Chris Bulus from Lagos and his teammate Olumide Ayoola.
Rising junior tennis star, Edwards, was pushed up to the Girls 16 category because she was considered too
good for her 12 and under age category. The petite tennis star proved the organisers right by winning all her matches in the group stage. She will play against Asosa Ehimwenma from Benin for a place in the final where she will likely meet Asosa’s sister, Osarume, who has to overcome Maryam Alli-Balogun in the other semifinal.
Other semifinalists include Gabriel Friday, Mathew Adeleye, Hadi Ojoye and Fabian Joseph in the Boys 14 category and Kasara Adegboyega, Ololade Holmes, Peace Udoh and Victoria Adah-Baje in the Girls 12 category.
“The junior players will be taken to the Surulere national stadium, after the semifinal matches, to watch the ladies’ and men’s finals of the CBN Senior Championship” said Godwin Kienka, director of the International Tennis Academy, organisers of the junior tennis circuit. “We hope that this will motivate them to aim even higher.
“We are planning to have a grand finale on Sunday beginning 2.00 pm – featuring great tennis, entertainment and an exhibition.” Kienka added.
